Pablo Lopez and the Minnesota Twins (88-75, 48-34 home) gave the Toronto Blue Jays (89-74, 46-36 away) everything they could handle on Tuesday night, taking an early 2-0 lead in Game 1 of the AL Wild Card series and never looking back en route to a 3-1 victory.
The win puts Minnesota one game away from advancing to the ALDS and Toronto on the brink of elimination. The odds for the opener were roughly a pick’em but, heading into Game 2, oddsmakers give the hometown Twins a decisive advantage.

Minnesota is a -142 favorite on the moneyline with Toronto coming back as a +114 road underdog. The over/under is sitting at 7.5 in Wednesday’s MLB odds, the same number as Game 1, which comfortably stayed under despite a two-run first inning from the home team. Toronto’s World Series odds plummeted from +1600 to +2800 after the Game 1 setback, while the Twins improved from +2000 to +1300. The Jays’ odds to advance in the MLB playoff bracket sank from +105 to +310, now needing to win back-to-back road games to take the best-of-three series.
Minnesota has not won a playoff series, or even a Wild Card game, since taking down the Yankees in the ALDS in 2002.
TOR vs MIN Starting Pitchers for Game 2
The battle on the mound for Game 2 is, at least on paper, a good one. The Jays turn to former Twin Jose Berrios to save their season, while Minnesota sends out Sonny Gray, who was in the mix of the Cy Young odds throughout the regular season.
Jose Berrios vs Sonny Gray

In addition to pitching well all season, Gray has had a ton of success against the Toronto lineup in the past. In 97 total at-bats, Jays hitters are slashing just .186/.288/.330 against the 33-year-old righty with four home runs and two doubles. The heart of Toronto’s lineup – Vlad Guerrero Jr and Bo Bichette – are a combined 1-for-10 with four strikeouts and a walk.
Luckily for the Jays, Berrios has been even more effective against the Minnesota hitters he’ll be facing on Wednesday. The Twins’ lineup has a .161/.274/.516 slash-line against the Puerto Rican with only one home in 62 at-bats.
Toronto Blue Jays vs Minnesota Twins Game 2 Pick
Berrios has the tendency to put in truly dismal performances from time to time, and he ended the season with back-to-back subpar outings against the Yankees (12 hits and eight earned runs over 11.2 innings of work). But those came on the heels of two shutout starts, and he also blanked the Twins over 5.2 innings back in May in this same ballpark. The longtime Twin was solid in his two career playoff starts while with Minnesota, as well. He surrendered just one earned run on each occasion while combining to throw nine innings in 2019 and 2020. Expect the 29-year-old to do his part to keep Toronto’s season alive.
But with Gray opposite Berrios on the mound, the play here isn’t the Toronto moneyline, it’s the first-half under.
TOR vs MIN Game 2 pick: first 5 innings under 3.5 (+124)
