France (2-2-0) survived a low-scoring affair with Belgium on Monday thanks to a late own-goal from Jan Vertonghen and now moves onto face another top-ten team in the quarterfinals in the form of Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal (2-1-1), who escaped Slovenia 3-0 on penalties later in the day.
The opening France vs Portugal odds slightly favor Les Bleus to move on, but both sides are in plus-money to win the game in regular time.

France’s odds to win the tournament improved to +400 after the win over Belgium. Portugal moved from +850 to +750 in the Euro 2024 odds after ousting Slovenia.
Unexpected Goalscoring Issues Continue to Plague France
No French players scored from the run of play in the group stage – the team’s only two goals from a Maximilian Wober own-goal against Austria and a Kylian Mbappe penalty against Poland. That concerning trend continued against Belgium; France was held scoreless for 85 minutes and only an unfortunate own-goal from Jan Vertonghen broke the nil-nil tie.
Adding in a 0-0 home draw with Canada in the final pre-tournament friendly, it has now been over 450 minutes since a French player has scored aside from Mbappe’s penalty.
France has still looked the better side in all four of its tournament games to date, though. They have generated 7.19 xGF over their four matches and surrendered just 2.40 xGA, per Flashscore. They held Belgium to 0.22 xGA on five attempts (two on target).

Portugal Survive Stout Slovenia
The Portuguese side that tallied five goals (plus another ruled out by VAR) in its first two matches went ice-cold in its final group-stage game against Georgia (2-0 loss) and then failed to solve Jan Oblak and Slovenia over 120 minutes of regular time and stoppage time in the round of 16. Despite controlling the vast majority of possession, Portugal’s attack lacked both quality and imagination against the smallest nation in Euro 2024, generating just three shots on target in the first 90 minutes.
Cristiano Ronaldo had multiple free kicks from within 25 yards but couldn’t find the target, and then spurned a penalty in extra time, thanks to a world-class save from Jan Oblak.

Portugal would eventually claim victory in a shootout, winning 3-0 on penalties as keeper Diogo Costa starred, but it was an altogether disappointing performance from a team that started this tournament so brightly.
Making matters worse, Portugal has an ugly 6-3-19 record against France all-time, according to 11v11.com. But they are 1-2-1 against the French in four matches since 2016. The most-recent – during the group stage at the last Euro – ended in a 2-2 draw in June 2021. Karim Benzema, who has since retired from the national team, had both goals for the French, while Ronaldo scored a pair of penalties for Portugal.
